SONG (-formerly known as Southport Operatic New Generation-) was formed in 1980 under the auspices of our senior society- Southport Amateur Operatic Society now known as Southport Spotlights- to stimulate the interest of young people in musical productions.
Open to young people from the age of nine upwards to eighteen, SONG aims to produce one large-scale musical each Easter and a smaller workshop or cabaret-style presentation in the Autumn.
By concentrating on one major production each year, with a generous six-month rehearsal schedule, SONG is able to stage large chorus numbers, complex dance routines and songs with intricate harmonies. This is achieved by hard work, the expertise of talented production teams and a belief in a disciplined approach to stage work. Each member has to audition before being accepted in to SONG. Belonging to SONG has enabled many of our members to fulfil their ambition of performing on stage. In addition to this obvious satisfaction they have also learned to work as a team, improve their self-confidence and develop their own personalities-all of which must prove a great benefit as they move into the adult world. SONG has also proved to be perfect training for those young people who have ambitions to pursue a professional career in musical theatre. A number of SONG's former members have progressed to professional dance and stage schools and some are currently working in top West End shows, some in the media and others in professional productions touring world-wide.
SONG is managed by a committee of individuals who give their time, skills and energies on a purely voluntary basis because we believe wholeheartedly in the worth of the experiences provided by membership of SONG.
Whether you are a performer, or a patron, the musical theatre has a special magic of its own. We believe that SONG can provide some of that magic for the young people of the Southport area. |
