Pick up your Roget’s Thesaurus, turn to find the word “excellent” and you will find many more words which could be ascribed to this wonderful (there’s one) performance of Godspell by SONG, a group of immensely talented youngsters: 26 in all, aged from 10 to 16.
On stage for the whole of the action, approx one and three quarter hours, they sang, acted and danced their way through a production which was apparently of great delight to them and certainly was to their audience.
Director Stephen Hughes-Alty, together with Choreographer Jackie Morris and Musical Director Paul Williams , obviously worked very hard in getting the very best out of their young charges and who, in return, gave all they could.
Charlie McMullan and Lydia Seed got us off to a fine start and sustained this level throughout, totally supported by Layla Carlin, Sophie Wright, Hayleigh (the hat) Griffin.
Add to these Mia Harrison, Anita Gillen, Molly Wilkinson, Astrid Travis, Joshua Malone and Ben Ankers. I’m keeping going because every single one deserved a mention – so: Charlotte Webster, Harry Gascoigne, Olivia Thorne, Bethany Griffin, Eden Birch and Charlie Edge (some voice this young lady has). Then there was Isabella Knowler, Laura Parr and Heidi Henders, as well as Nisha Kumari-Webster, Emma Dinsdale, Helena Fletcher Hill, Matthew Higginson, Jamie Lonsdale and Tom McMullan. A star studded cast exuding personality and versatility in all they did.
I have one small criticism to make. There were two occasions when the action called for conflicting groups to speak/sing at the same time, which had a slight tendency to make hearing the relevant dialogue difficult and I did not want to miss any of it. I told you it was a small thing.
The costuming was great, courtesy of Karen Fairclough, and the set (Alan Gosling) was simple but effective. Sound and lighting fine, and the music maintained at the right level by the MD and musicians.
It was indeed a triumph for the Production Team, all the Technical Team and to the magnificent Performers.
